John Dewey stated if the writer intened a piece to be a poem, it is one whether other poets acknowledge it or not. On the other hand Leo Tolstoy opposed this theory by saying what makes something art or not is how it is experienced by the audience, not the intention of the creator... Yet another view comprising the Functionalist philosophy says if a piece counts as art is the function it plays in a particular context (a tiger-decorated toilet bowl is functional as a toilet, and is art as an expression of purple and gold pride.)
